Who Should Consider a Generac Alternative?

A Generac is a reasonable default, but it is worth getting at least one competing quote if:

  • Your best local installer sells another brand. Every manufacturer here sells and services its generators through authorized dealers, so local installation and service quality often matter more than the badge.
  • You want a longer standard warranty. Briggs & Stratton and Champion both publish longer standard residential warranties than Generac's 5-year limited warranty (details below).
  • You need a larger residential system. Kohler, Cummins and Generac all list home standby models well above 26 kW. Briggs & Stratton's residential lineup tops out at 26 kW, as does the largest Champion home standby system we found.
  • You would rather not burn fuel at all. A battery system stores energy instead of running an engine, which suits some homes with solar and modest backup needs.

If you have already narrowed it to two brands, our head-to-head guides go deeper: Generac vs Kohler, Generac vs Cummins, Generac vs Briggs & Stratton, Generac vs Champion and Kohler vs Cummins.

Kohler (Rehlko): The Closest Like-for-Like Alternative

KOHLER home generators are part of Rehlko, formerly Kohler Energy. Kohler's home generator catalog runs from the 10 kW 10RESV through the 14RCA, 20RCA and 26RCA to larger models up to the 60 kW 60RCLB, all on natural gas or LP.

  • Warranty: Kohler's five-year limited warranty (TP-7156) covers 5 years or 2,000 hours from the registered startup date, with labor and travel included in the first two years. Kohler says certified dealers offer extended warranties of up to 10 years.
  • Dealers: Kohler's locator ranks certified dealers in Titanium, Platinum, Gold and Silver tiers.
  • Tradeoff: Kohler's catalog lists fewer models than Generac's, and dealer density varies by area.

See the Kohler generator guide, the Kohler 26RCA and how to find a Kohler dealer.

Cummins: Broad Range Through a Commercial-Generator Brand

Cummins' QuietConnect residential home standby series lists the RS13A, RS17A and RS20A through the RS150, rated 13 to 150 kW standby, on natural gas or LP.

  • Warranty: the RS20A spec sheet says the RS13A, RS17A, RS20A and RS20AC carry a 5-year/2,000-hour limited warranty and the RA transfer switches a 2-year warranty. Cummins' home standby page says extended warranty options allow full coverage up to 10 years.
  • Dealers: Cummins offers a dealer locator and a free in-home assessment by an authorized representative.
  • Tradeoff: the spec sheet is an older document, so ask the dealer for the current warranty statement.

Briggs & Stratton: 7 Years of Parts, Labor and Travel

Briggs & Stratton's residential standby lineup covers PowerProtect and PowerProtect+ models from 13 kW to 26 kW, with DX variants. Product pages list fuel consumption on both LP and natural gas.

  • Warranty: each PowerProtect page lists a "7-Year Comprehensive" limited warranty, and the PowerProtect+ 26kW page says it covers parts, labor and travel for a full 7 years.
  • Range: air-cooled only, topping out at 26 kW. Briggs & Stratton also sells home battery storage.
  • Tradeoff: fewer sizes than Generac, Kohler or Cummins, so very large homes may need another brand.

See our Generac vs Briggs & Stratton comparison, the Briggs & Stratton guide and the PowerProtect+ 26kW.

Champion: A 10-Year Standard Warranty

Champion's home standby systems include the 14 kW aXis, 22 kW fleX and 26 kW fleX, each sold with a transfer switch. The 14 kW unit is rated 14,000 watts on propane and 12,500 watts on natural gas.

  • Warranty: Champion advertises a 10-year limited warranty. The 22 kW operator's manual defines it as 10 years or 2,000 hours from activation by an Authorized Champion Home Standby Dealer, with mileage, labor and parts in years 1-2 and parts only in years 3-10. The included transfer switch has a 2-year limited warranty.
  • Tradeoff: labor coverage ends after year 2, the size range is narrower, and dealer coverage should be checked for your ZIP code.

Home Battery Backup: Tesla Powerwall 3

A battery is not a like-for-like generator replacement. Tesla's Powerwall 3 datasheet lists 13.5 kWh of stored energy, up to 11.5 kW of continuous output per unit, support for up to 20 kW DC of solar and up to four units, with a 10-year warranty. Tesla expects the owner to provide an internet connection.

A standby generator keeps running as long as its gas supply lasts; a battery runs until its stored energy is used, unless solar recharges it. For outage length, loads and costs, read whole-house generator vs home battery, or compare Powerwall 3 directly in Tesla Powerwall vs whole-house generator.

How Generac Compares on Warranty and Dealers

Generac's 5-year limited warranty runs 5 years or 2,000 hours, with parts, labor and travel in years 1-2, parts in year 3 and major components only in years 4-5; travel is limited to 100 miles or 3 hours. Warranty work goes through an Independent Authorized Service Dealer.

On dealers, Generac publishes dealer tiers from Select to Premier, and Premier dealers employ at least four factory-trained technicians. Its residential gaseous catalog spans 10 kW to 150 kW. More detail: Generac warranty, Generac dealers and Generac cost.

How to Choose Between Generac and an Alternative

  1. Size the load first. Use the generator size calculator so every quote targets the same capacity on your fuel.
  2. Find which brands are serviced near you. Check each manufacturer's locator for your ZIP code and ask who will do warranty work.
  3. Get two or more complete quotes. Compare scope with the quote comparison tool and check typical ranges in the whole-house generator cost guide.
  4. Read the warranty statement, not the headline. Note what is covered each year, whether labor and travel are included, and what the dealer must do at startup.
  5. Plan for service. Ask about maintenance plans and response after storms.

Generac Alternatives FAQs

Who are Generac's main competitors?

For home standby generators, the main competitors are Kohler (part of Rehlko), Cummins, Briggs & Stratton and Champion. Home battery systems such as Tesla Powerwall 3 compete for some backup buyers but work differently.

Which Generac alternative has the longest warranty?

By term, Champion's standard home standby warranty is the longest of the brands compared here: 10 years or 2,000 hours, though labor and mileage are covered only in years 1-2. Briggs & Stratton lists a 7-year comprehensive limited warranty that covers parts, labor and travel.

Is Kohler better than Generac?

Neither is better for every home. Both offer 5-year/2,000-hour standard warranties and natural gas or LP models; the deciding factors are usually the local dealer, the exact model and the complete installed quote.

Are there Generac alternatives above 26 kW?

Yes. Kohler lists home generators up to the 60 kW 60RCLB, and Cummins' QuietConnect residential series runs up to 150 kW standby. Generac also lists larger models.

Is a home battery a good alternative to a Generac generator?

It can be for shorter outages, homes with solar, or where fuel is unavailable. A Powerwall 3 stores 13.5 kWh per unit, so long outages and large loads favor a standby generator.

Do I need an authorized dealer for an alternative brand?

Generally yes. Generac, Kohler and Champion tie warranty work or warranty start to authorized dealers in their warranty documents, and Cummins and Briggs & Stratton sell standby units through dealer networks.
