How Much Does a Kohler 48RCLC Cost Installed?
Kohler’s starting equipment MSRP for the 48RCLC is $25,703, checked September 30, 2026. That is not an installed price.
A complete quote should itemize the generator, compatible transfer switch, battery, foundation, electrical and fuel work, permits, commissioning, registration and any load controls or cold-weather accessories. Long trenching runs, gas-meter upgrades and changes to service panels can materially change the total. Compare equivalent scopes from local installers; no national installed average is asserted here.

Is a 48kW Generator Overkill for My House?
Size the 48RCLC from electrical demand rather than square footage. The Kohler 48RCLC is intended for large simultaneous loads where the 38RCLC is insufficient, with a 6.2L V8 and substantial installation footprint. Use 48kW for natural-gas running loads and 48kW for propane. Account separately for the 113kVA peak starting rating and loads that can overlap. Electric heat, dryers, EV charging, pool equipment and multiple compressors can change the result substantially. A transfer switch connected to the whole service does not mean every appliance can operate at once. Have the installer validate the load calculation and any load-shedding priorities.

Will the Kohler 48RCLC Run Everything on a 200A Service?
Service amperage does not specify generator size. At 240V, 48kW on natural gas represents about 200A of continuous output; propane output is 48kW. A 200A or 400A utility service rating is not a statement of normal demand. Have the installer calculate simultaneous loads, motor starts and the transfer arrangement across all panels.
What Happens on a 400A Electrical Service?
Service amperage does not specify generator size. At 240V, 48kW on natural gas represents about 200A of continuous output; propane output is 48kW. A 200A or 400A utility service rating is not a statement of normal demand. Have the installer calculate simultaneous loads, motor starts and the transfer arrangement across all panels.
Does the Kohler 48RCLC Include a Transfer Switch?
Budget and specify the automatic transfer switch separately unless the seller explicitly includes a compatible unit in the quoted package. Match switch amperage, service-entrance suitability, number of panels and load management to the installation design. A generator’s kW rating alone does not determine the correct transfer switch.
Does the 48RCLC Include a Starting Battery?
The starting battery must be explicitly included in your purchase and installation scope. The specification calls for one 12V Group 24 battery rated at least 630 CCA at 0°F. Verify terminal layout, hold-down fit and any cold-weather accessories for the exact unit.
How Much Natural Gas Does the Kohler 48RCLC Use?
The Kohler 48RCLC uses 512 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 875 at full load on natural gas.
| Load | Natural gas, ft³/hr |
|---|---|
| 25% | 307 |
| 50% | 512 |
| 75% | 717 |
| 100% | 875 |
These are the 60Hz technical-sheet figures checked September 30, 2026. Actual consumption depends on load and fuel conditions.
Will My Existing Gas Meter Feed a 48RCLC?
Have the gas utility and installer check the full connected load; the 48RCLC alone requires 875 ft³/hr at full load in the current technical table. Add furnaces, water heaters and other gas appliances. Pipe diameter also depends on length, fittings, pressure and permissible pressure drop. The generator’s inlet connection size is not a sizing instruction for the complete supply run.
How Much Propane Does the Kohler 48RCLC Use?
The Kohler 48RCLC uses 165 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 315 at full load on LP vapor.
| Load | LP vapor, ft³/hr | Approx. liquid propane, gal/hr |
|---|---|---|
| 25% | 106 | 2.91 |
| 50% | 165 | 4.53 |
| 75% | 222 | 6.10 |
| 100% | 315 | 8.66 |
These are the 60Hz technical-sheet figures checked September 30, 2026. Actual consumption depends on load and fuel conditions. Gallons per hour are calculated from the manufacturer’s factor of 36.39 ft³ of LP vapor per gallon; cubic metres per hour must not be read as gallons per hour.
How Long Will a 500-Gallon Propane Tank Run a 48RCLC?
A nominal 500-gallon tank filled to 80% holds about 400 gallons. At constant full load, 400 ÷ 8.66 gives roughly 46 hours; at half load, 400 ÷ 4.53 gives roughly 88 hours.
This is fuel arithmetic, not a guaranteed usable runtime. Keep a reserve; the generator may lose fuel delivery before the tank is empty. Cold weather, tank size, vaporization capacity, regulator sizing and other propane appliances affect performance. Have the propane supplier size the tank and delivery system for the generator’s full-load demand.
Natural Gas or Propane: Which Makes More Sense?
Choose according to the fuel available at the property and its delivery reliability. The 48RCLC is rated 48kW on natural gas and 48kW on propane. Natural gas avoids on-site fuel storage but needs adequate utility capacity; propane needs a correctly sized tank, vaporization rate and refill plan. Compare local delivered fuel prices using the model’s load-specific consumption figures.
How Loud Is the Kohler 48RCLC?
The current consumer catalog lists 57 dBA during exercise and 61 dBA during operation for the 48RCLC. The linked technical sheet uses a different sound figure or measurement description, so the catalog and PDF values should not be treated as interchangeable tests. These are published test figures, not a guarantee at your property line. Distance, load, measurement method, walls and reflections change what neighbors hear. Ask the installer to review placement and local noise rules.

Why Is the 48RCLC So Much Heavier Than the 38RCLC?
The 48RCLC changes from the 38RCLC’s 2.2L turbocharged inline-four to a 6.2L V8. Catalog weight rises from 1,370 to 1,690 lb, a 320 lb difference. That changes handling and foundation planning as well as engine architecture. Confirm lifting and delivery access with the installer.
