How Much Does a Kohler 38RCLC Cost Installed?

Kohler’s starting equipment MSRP for the 38RCLC is $22,949, checked September 30, 2026. That is not an installed price.

A complete quote should itemize the generator, compatible transfer switch, battery, foundation, electrical and fuel work, permits, commissioning, registration and any load controls or cold-weather accessories. Long trenching runs, gas-meter upgrades and changes to service panels can materially change the total. Compare equivalent scopes from local installers; no national installed average is asserted here.

Is a 38kW Generator Overkill for My House?

Size the 38RCLC from electrical demand rather than square footage. The Kohler 38RCLC is intended for large homes with multiple motors and enough verified gas-service capacity for a liquid-cooled installation. Use 38kW for natural-gas running loads and 38kW for propane. Account separately for the 74kVA peak starting rating and loads that can overlap. Electric heat, dryers, EV charging, pool equipment and multiple compressors can change the result substantially. A transfer switch connected to the whole service does not mean every appliance can operate at once. Have the installer validate the load calculation and any load-shedding priorities.

Can the 38RCLC Start Multiple Air Conditioners?

The 38RCLC has a published 74kVA peak motor-starting rating, but compatibility with your HVAC system requires a load calculation. Its continuous output is 38kW on natural gas or 38kW on propane. Compressor starting amps, other loads already running and permissible voltage dip determine whether it can start the equipment. Ask the installer to model the largest start with the other selected loads online; soft starters or load management may change the result.

Does the Kohler 38RCLC Include a Transfer Switch?

Budget and specify the automatic transfer switch separately unless the seller explicitly includes a compatible unit in the quoted package. Match switch amperage, service-entrance suitability, number of panels and load management to the installation design. A generator’s kW rating alone does not determine the correct transfer switch.

Do I Need a 200A or 400A Transfer Switch?

Budget and specify the automatic transfer switch separately unless the seller explicitly includes a compatible unit in the quoted package. Match switch amperage, service-entrance suitability, number of panels and load management to the installation design. A generator’s kW rating alone does not determine the correct transfer switch.

Will My Natural-Gas Meter Handle a Kohler 38RCLC?

Have the gas utility and installer check the full connected load; the 38RCLC alone requires 445 ft³/hr at full load in the current technical table. Add furnaces, water heaters and other gas appliances. Pipe diameter also depends on length, fittings, pressure and permissible pressure drop. The generator’s inlet connection size is not a sizing instruction for the complete supply run.

How Much Propane Does the Kohler 38RCLC Use?

The Kohler 38RCLC uses 97 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 178 at full load on LP vapor.

Load LP vapor, ft³/hr Approx. liquid propane, gal/hr
25% 75 2.06
50% 97 2.67
75% 140 3.85
100% 178 4.89

These are the 60Hz technical-sheet figures checked September 30, 2026. Actual consumption depends on load and fuel conditions. Gallons per hour are calculated from the manufacturer’s factor of 36.39 ft³ of LP vapor per gallon; cubic metres per hour must not be read as gallons per hour. Some catalog and older fuel tables show different values. Use the linked technical sheet and have the installer confirm the specification for your ordered unit.

How Long Will a 500-Gallon Propane Tank Run the 38RCLC?

A nominal 500-gallon tank filled to 80% holds about 400 gallons. At constant full load, 400 ÷ 4.89 gives roughly 82 hours; at half load, 400 ÷ 2.67 gives roughly 150 hours.

This is fuel arithmetic, not a guaranteed usable runtime. Keep a reserve; the generator may lose fuel delivery before the tank is empty. Cold weather, tank size, vaporization capacity, regulator sizing and other propane appliances affect performance. Have the propane supplier size the tank and delivery system for the generator’s full-load demand.

How Loud Is the Kohler 38RCLC?

The current consumer catalog lists 54 dBA during exercise and 62 dBA during operation for the 38RCLC. The linked technical sheet uses a different sound figure or measurement description, so the catalog and PDF values should not be treated as interchangeable tests. These are published test figures, not a guarantee at your property line. Distance, load, measurement method, walls and reflections change what neighbors hear. Ask the installer to review placement and local noise rules.
