What the size and fuel figures mean for installation

The 24RCLA is a much larger liquid-cooled set than Kohler's air-cooled models: 74 in long and 1,260 lb shipping weight, and Kohler states it meets the NFPA 37 18 in offset for installation. On propane Kohler publishes 2.1 gal/hr at half load, roughly 151 gallons over a 72-hour outage (our arithmetic: 2.1 × 72). See the propane tank sizing guide. (Source: 1.)

Where the 24RCLA Fits

The Kohler 24RCLA is intended for buyers prioritizing a low-speed liquid-cooled engine for extended standby outages rather than maximum kW per dollar. On natural gas, plan against 21kW rather than the propane nameplate. The 37kVA starting rating describes a short motor-start event and cannot be added to the running output.

Inventory the loads you need during an outage, including HVAC starting current, pumps and electric heat. Use the generator size calculator to organize the load list, then have an installer check the design against the exact alternator and fuel configuration.

Equipment Cost and Installation Scope

Kohler’s starting equipment MSRP for the 24RCLA is $17,900, checked September 30, 2026. That is not an installed price.

A complete quote should itemize the generator, compatible transfer switch, battery, foundation, electrical and fuel work, permits, commissioning, registration and any load controls or cold-weather accessories. Long trenching runs, gas-meter upgrades and changes to service panels can materially change the total. Compare equivalent scopes from local installers; no national installed average is asserted here.

Transfer Switch and Fuel Supply

Budget and specify the automatic transfer switch separately unless the seller explicitly includes a compatible unit in the quoted package. The consumer catalog says “Included,” while the technical sheet lists transfer switches as options. Get the exact package contents in writing. Match switch amperage, service-entrance suitability, number of panels and load management to the installation design. A generator’s kW rating alone does not determine the correct transfer switch.

At full load, the technical sheet lists 300 ft³/hr of natural gas and 134 ft³/hr of LP vapor. Have the installer check fuel supply with the other connected appliances operating; a meter label or short pipe run alone does not establish sufficient capacity.

Ownership and Service

TP-6905 lists oil and filter changes yearly or at 120 operating hours. Check oil and coolant daily. Use the complete current manual for air-filter, ignition, battery and other service tasks. Severe conditions may require shorter intervals; match the manual to your model and serial number.
