How Much Does a Kohler 24RCLA Cost?

Kohler’s starting equipment MSRP for the 24RCLA is $17,900, checked September 30, 2026. That is not an installed price.

A complete quote should itemize the generator, compatible transfer switch, battery, foundation, electrical and fuel work, permits, commissioning, registration and any load controls or cold-weather accessories. Long trenching runs, gas-meter upgrades and changes to service panels can materially change the total. Compare equivalent scopes from local installers; no national installed average is asserted here.

Does the Kohler 24RCLA Include an Automatic Transfer Switch?

Budget and specify the automatic transfer switch separately unless the seller explicitly includes a compatible unit in the quoted package. The consumer catalog says “Included,” while the technical sheet lists transfer switches as options. Get the exact package contents in writing. Match switch amperage, service-entrance suitability, number of panels and load management to the installation design. A generator’s kW rating alone does not determine the correct transfer switch.

Does the Kohler 24RCLA Include a Battery?

The starting battery must be explicitly included in your purchase and installation scope. The specification calls for one 12V Group 24 battery rated at least 630 CCA at 0°F. Verify terminal layout, hold-down fit and any cold-weather accessories for the exact unit.

Will a Kohler 24RCLA Run My Whole House?

Size the 24RCLA from electrical demand rather than square footage. The Kohler 24RCLA is intended for buyers prioritizing a low-speed liquid-cooled engine for extended standby outages rather than maximum kW per dollar. Use 21kW for natural-gas running loads and 24kW for propane. Account separately for the 37kVA peak starting rating and loads that can overlap. Electric heat, dryers, EV charging, pool equipment and multiple compressors can change the result substantially. A transfer switch connected to the whole service does not mean every appliance can operate at once. Have the installer validate the load calculation and any load-shedding priorities.

Can the 24RCLA Start a 5-Ton Air Conditioner?

The 24RCLA has a published 37kVA peak motor-starting rating, but compatibility with your HVAC system requires a load calculation. Its continuous output is 21kW on natural gas or 24kW on propane. Compressor starting amps, other loads already running and permissible voltage dip determine whether it can start the equipment. Ask the installer to model the largest start with the other selected loads online; soft starters or load management may change the result.

How Much Natural Gas Does the Kohler 24RCLA Use?

The Kohler 24RCLA uses 174 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 300 at full load on natural gas.

Load Natural gas, ft³/hr
25% 144
50% 174
75% 227
100% 300

These are the 60Hz technical-sheet figures checked September 30, 2026. Actual consumption depends on load and fuel conditions. Some catalog and older fuel tables show different values. Use the linked technical sheet and have the installer confirm the specification for your ordered unit.

How Much Propane Does the Kohler 24RCLA Use?

The Kohler 24RCLA uses 78 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 134 at full load on LP vapor.

Load LP vapor, ft³/hr Approx. liquid propane, gal/hr
25% 62 1.70
50% 78 2.14
75% 104 2.86
100% 134 3.68

These are the 60Hz technical-sheet figures checked September 30, 2026. Actual consumption depends on load and fuel conditions. Gallons per hour are calculated from the manufacturer’s factor of 36.39 ft³ of LP vapor per gallon; cubic metres per hour must not be read as gallons per hour. Some catalog and older fuel tables show different values. Use the linked technical sheet and have the installer confirm the specification for your ordered unit.

How Long Will a 500-Gallon Propane Tank Run a 24RCLA?

A nominal 500-gallon tank filled to 80% holds about 400 gallons. At constant full load, 400 ÷ 3.68 gives roughly 109 hours; at half load, 400 ÷ 2.14 gives roughly 187 hours.

This is fuel arithmetic, not a guaranteed usable runtime. Keep a reserve; the generator may lose fuel delivery before the tank is empty. Cold weather, tank size, vaporization capacity, regulator sizing and other propane appliances affect performance. Have the propane supplier size the tank and delivery system for the generator’s full-load demand.

Will My Natural-Gas Service Handle the 24RCLA?

Have the gas utility and installer check the full connected load; the 24RCLA alone requires 300 ft³/hr at full load in the current technical table. Add furnaces, water heaters and other gas appliances. Pipe diameter also depends on length, fittings, pressure and permissible pressure drop. The generator’s inlet connection size is not a sizing instruction for the complete supply run.

How Loud Is the Kohler 24RCLA?

The current consumer catalog lists 54 dBA during exercise and 61 dBA during operation for the 24RCLA. The linked technical sheet uses a different sound figure or measurement description, so the catalog and PDF values should not be treated as interchangeable tests. These are published test figures, not a guarantee at your property line. Distance, load, measurement method, walls and reflections change what neighbors hear. Ask the installer to review placement and local noise rules.

Why Does the 24RCLA Run at 1,800 rpm?

The 24RCLA uses a four-pole alternator and a liquid-cooled 2.2L inline-four running at 1,800 rpm. This is a different architecture from the 3,600-rpm air-cooled RCA line. Kohler positions the liquid-cooled line for extended standby outages. Lower engine speed does not establish a guaranteed lifetime or eliminate runtime maintenance.

Is Liquid-Cooled Better for a Week-Long Outage?

Extended standby operation depends on fuel supply, load, operating conditions and service performed at runtime intervals. The Kohler 24RCLA is intended for buyers prioritizing a low-speed liquid-cooled engine for extended standby outages rather than maximum kW per dollar. There is no guaranteed engine life or unattended multi-day runtime stated here. Check oil on the model’s schedule and arrange maintenance during long outages; never refill or service a running unit.
