Is a Kohler 20RCA Big Enough for My House?

Size the 20RCA from electrical demand rather than square footage. The Kohler 20RCA is intended for homes with substantial central-air starting demand and a running-load plan within 18kW on natural gas. Use 18kW for natural-gas running loads and 20kW for propane. Account separately for the 41kVA peak starting rating and loads that can overlap. Electric heat, dryers, EV charging, pool equipment and multiple compressors can change the result substantially. A transfer switch connected to the whole service does not mean every appliance can operate at once. Have the installer validate the load calculation and any load-shedding priorities.

Can the Kohler 20RCA Run a 5-Ton Air Conditioner?

The 20RCA has a published 41kVA peak motor-starting rating, but compatibility with your HVAC system requires a load calculation. Its continuous output is 18kW on natural gas or 20kW on propane. Compressor starting amps, other loads already running and permissible voltage dip determine whether it can start the equipment. Ask the installer to model the largest start with the other selected loads online; soft starters or load management may change the result.

How Much Does a Kohler 20RCA Cost Installed?

Kohler’s starting equipment MSRP for the 20RCA is $6,016, checked September 30, 2026. That is not an installed price.

A complete quote should itemize the generator, compatible transfer switch, battery, foundation, electrical and fuel work, permits, commissioning, registration and any load controls or cold-weather accessories. Long trenching runs, gas-meter upgrades and changes to service panels can materially change the total. Compare equivalent scopes from local installers; no national installed average is asserted here.

Does the Kohler 20RCA Include a Transfer Switch?

Confirm the exact package: 20RCA and 20RCAL are different purchasing choices. The L package is the transfer-switch bundle; do not assume a base-model equipment quote includes the switch. Require the transfer-switch model, amperage, service-entrance rating and load-management accessories as separate named items in the quote. A generator’s kW rating alone does not determine the correct transfer switch.

How Much Natural Gas Does a Kohler 20RCA Use?

The Kohler 20RCA uses 161 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 281 at full load on natural gas.

Load Natural gas, ft³/hr
25% 127
50% 161
75% 243
100% 281

These are the 60Hz technical-sheet figures checked September 30, 2026. Actual consumption depends on load and fuel conditions.

How Much Propane Does a Kohler 20RCA Use?

The Kohler 20RCA uses 82 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 136 at full load on LP vapor.

Load LP vapor, ft³/hr Approx. liquid propane, gal/hr
25% 59 1.62
50% 82 2.25
75% 109 3.00
100% 136 3.74

These are the 60Hz technical-sheet figures checked September 30, 2026. Actual consumption depends on load and fuel conditions. Gallons per hour are calculated from the manufacturer’s factor of 36.39 ft³ of LP vapor per gallon; cubic metres per hour must not be read as gallons per hour.

How Long Will a 500-Gallon Propane Tank Run a Kohler 20RCA?

A nominal 500-gallon tank filled to 80% holds about 400 gallons. At constant full load, 400 ÷ 3.74 gives roughly 107 hours; at half load, 400 ÷ 2.25 gives roughly 178 hours.

This is fuel arithmetic, not a guaranteed usable runtime. Keep a reserve; the generator may lose fuel delivery before the tank is empty. Cold weather, tank size, vaporization capacity, regulator sizing and other propane appliances affect performance. Have the propane supplier size the tank and delivery system for the generator’s full-load demand.

Will My Natural-Gas Meter Handle a Kohler 20RCA?

Have the gas utility and installer check the full connected load; the 20RCA alone requires 281 ft³/hr at full load in the current technical table. Add furnaces, water heaters and other gas appliances. Pipe diameter also depends on length, fittings, pressure and permissible pressure drop. The generator’s inlet connection size is not a sizing instruction for the complete supply run.

Does the Kohler 20RCA Include a Battery?

The starting battery must be explicitly included in your purchase and installation scope. The specification calls for a 12V Group 51 battery rated at least 500 CCA at 0°F. Verify terminal layout, hold-down fit and any cold-weather accessories for the exact unit.

How Loud Is the Kohler 20RCA?

The current consumer catalog lists 64 dBA during exercise and 69 dBA during operation for the 20RCA. The linked technical sheet uses a different sound figure or measurement description, so the catalog and PDF values should not be treated as interchangeable tests. These are published test figures, not a guarantee at your property line. Distance, load, measurement method, walls and reflections change what neighbors hear. Ask the installer to review placement and local noise rules.

How Should You Compare the Kohler 20RCA With a Generac Alternative?

Compare an equivalent installed system, not just the headline kW or generator-only price. The 20RCA provides 20kW on propane and 18kW on natural gas, with a 41kVA peak motor-starting rating. The Kohler 20RCA is intended for homes with substantial central-air starting demand and a running-load plan within 18kW on natural gas.

For a Generac alternative, compare current model generations, fuel ratings, transfer-switch scope, maintenance and nearby service support in our Kohler vs. Generac guide. No controlled head-to-head failure-rate dataset is supplied here, so owner anecdotes do not establish a reliability winner.
