Is the Kohler 12RESV Really a 12kW Generator?

Yes on propane. On natural gas, the Kohler 12RESV is rated for 11kW.

That's an important distinction because natural gas is a common permanent fuel for standby generators.

At 240 volts:

Propane: 12kW / 50A

Natural gas: 11kW / 45.8A

Natural-gas capacity is therefore roughly 8% lower than the headline propane rating.

That does not make the 12RESV underpowered.

It simply means the load calculation needs to use the specification for the fuel you will actually burn.

Is a Kohler 12RESV Big Enough for My House?

Size the 12RESV from electrical demand rather than square footage. The Kohler 12RESV is intended for a compact essential-load installation needing more output and starting headroom than the 10RESV. Use 11kW for natural-gas running loads and 12kW for propane. Account separately for the 20.3kVA peak starting rating and loads that can overlap. Electric heat, dryers, EV charging, pool equipment and multiple compressors can change the result substantially. A transfer switch connected to the whole service does not mean every appliance can operate at once. Have the installer validate the load calculation and any load-shedding priorities.

Can a Kohler 12RESV Run Central Air Conditioning?

The 12RESV has a published 20.3kVA peak motor-starting rating, but compatibility with your HVAC system requires a load calculation. Its continuous output is 11kW on natural gas or 12kW on propane. Compressor starting amps, other loads already running and permissible voltage dip determine whether it can start the equipment. Ask the installer to model the largest start with the other selected loads online; soft starters or load management may change the result.

What Transfer Switch Comes With the Kohler 12RESV?

Confirm the exact package: 12RESV and 12RESVL are different purchasing choices. The L package is the transfer-switch bundle; do not assume a base-model equipment quote includes the switch. Require the transfer-switch model, amperage, service-entrance rating and load-management accessories as separate named items in the quote. The consumer catalog’s “Included” field can conflict with the technical-sheet options or its package FAQ. Written SKU-level confirmation is the reliable purchasing check. A generator’s kW rating alone does not determine the correct transfer switch.

How Much Does a Kohler 12RESV Cost Installed?

Kohler’s starting equipment MSRP for the 12RESV is $4,384, checked September 30, 2026. That is not an installed price.

A complete quote should itemize the generator, compatible transfer switch, battery, foundation, electrical and fuel work, permits, commissioning, registration and any load controls or cold-weather accessories. Long trenching runs, gas-meter upgrades and changes to service panels can materially change the total. Compare equivalent scopes from local installers; no national installed average is asserted here.

How Long Will a 500-Gallon Propane Tank Run a 12RESV?

A nominal 500-gallon tank filled to 80% holds about 400 gallons. At constant full load, 400 ÷ 2.83 gives roughly 141 hours; at half load, 400 ÷ 1.57 gives roughly 255 hours.

This is fuel arithmetic, not a guaranteed usable runtime. Keep a reserve; the generator may lose fuel delivery before the tank is empty. Cold weather, tank size, vaporization capacity, regulator sizing and other propane appliances affect performance. Have the propane supplier size the tank and delivery system for the generator’s full-load demand.

Will My Natural-Gas Meter Handle a Kohler 12RESV?

Have the gas utility and installer check the full connected load; the 12RESV alone requires 216 ft³/hr at full load in the current technical table. Add furnaces, water heaters and other gas appliances. Pipe diameter also depends on length, fittings, pressure and permissible pressure drop. The generator’s inlet connection size is not a sizing instruction for the complete supply run.
