How to Find a Generac Service Dealer Near You

Generac's dealer locator lets you choose between two kinds of search: Sales & Installation and Maintenance & Service. If you already own a generator, use the Maintenance & Service filter.

  1. Enter your ZIP code in the dealer locator and select Maintenance & Service.
  2. Look for the Service badge. Generac uses it to mark Certified Service Dealers, whose technicians are certified in the diagnostics, maintenance and repair of Generac products and are periodically recertified.
  3. Check for Aligned Contractors - Service & Warranty. Generac lists these as companies that have completed Generac service training and are authorized to perform maintenance and warranty repairs on eligible residential generators.
  4. Or submit a service request. Generac's request service page for standby generators asks for your serial number and connects you with a Generac Certified Service Provider.
  5. Have your model and serial number ready. The owner's manual asks owners to supply both when contacting an IASD about parts or service.

Not every Generac dealer offers service. Generac's dealer tiers page says not every Select dealer offers installation and service, while Elite dealers have at least one factory-trained technician for maintenance and minor repairs and Elite Plus dealers have at least two, with liquid-cooled expertise. If you are still comparing installers for a new system, our guide to finding and comparing Generac dealers near you covers sales and installation.

Warranty Repairs Must Go Through an Authorized Service Dealer

Generac's 5-year limited warranty for residential and commercial standby generators states that any and all warranty repairs or concerns must be handled by an Independent Authorized Service Dealer, or a branch of one. Claimed defects are evaluated by the nearest IASD.

The same document sets out several conditions that affect service visits:

  • Term: 5 years or 2,000 hours, whichever comes first, starting at successful start-up and/or online activation.
  • What each year covers: years 1-2 cover parts, labor and limited travel; year 3 covers parts only; years 4-5 cover major components only (the engine short block and the alternator rotor and stator).
  • Registration and maintenance records: the unit must be registered with proof of purchase, and proof that all required maintenance was performed must be available.
  • Travel: covered travel is limited to 100 miles or 3 hours round trip, whichever is less, from the nearest IASD.
  • Not covered: normal maintenance (tune-ups, associated parts, adjustments, installation and start-up), starting batteries, fuses, light bulbs and engine fluids, overtime, holiday or emergency labor outside normal business hours, failures caused by acts of God such as windstorms and hurricanes, and damage caused by non-Generac replacement parts.

What Generac Maintenance Includes

The owner's manual for 10-26 kW 60 Hz air-cooled home standby generators recommends that all maintenance be performed by an IASD. It also makes clear that normal maintenance is the owner's responsibility and is not a warranty defect. The manual's service schedule includes:

Interval Task (per the Generac owner's manual)
After the first 25 hours Change the engine oil and oil filter (break-in)
Every year Inspect for water intrusion and perform a fuel-system leak test
Schedule A: every 2 years or 200 hours Check battery condition; replace engine oil and oil filter
Schedule B: every 4 years or 400 hours Replace oil and oil filter, air filter and spark plug(s); inspect and adjust valve clearance where applicable
Daily when running continuously, or before each use Inspect enclosure louvers for debris, inspect for fuel or oil leaks and check the oil level

In cold weather (below 40°F) or continuous running above 85°F, the manual calls for oil and filter changes every year or 100 hours. The controller prompts when Schedule A or Schedule B maintenance is due, and Generac maintenance kits (oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, shop towel and funnel) are available through an IASD.

Intervals differ by model and generation, so always follow the manual for your unit. Our guides cover each task in more detail: the Generac maintenance schedule, oil change, air filter replacement, spark plug replacement and battery replacement.

Common Generac Repair Issues

Write down any alarm code before you clear it and give it to the technician. These guides explain what each symptom usually means:

If an alarm returns after it has been cleared, stop resetting it and book a service visit with an IASD.

What Generac Service Costs

Generac does not publish a national price list for service visits, tune-ups or repairs; dealers set their own rates. For typical service-visit, tune-up and maintenance-plan price ranges, see our Generac service cost guide.

Two warranty rules shape the bill: normal maintenance, including tune-ups and their parts, is never covered, and overtime, holiday or emergency labor outside normal business hours is excluded.

Questions to Ask a Generac Service Provider

  • Are you listed in Generac's dealer locator under Maintenance & Service, and do you hold the Service badge?
  • Can you perform warranty repairs on my generator, and will you handle the warranty claim with Generac?
  • Do you service my model and generation? Give the model and serial number when you call.
  • Which Schedule A or Schedule B tasks does this visit include, and will you use Generac parts? The warranty excludes damage caused by non-Generac replacement parts.
  • Will I get a written service record? Generac's warranty requires proof that the required maintenance was performed.
  • What do you charge for after-hours or emergency calls, and for travel beyond the warranty's travel limit?
  • Do you offer a maintenance plan, and exactly which tasks and visits does it include?

Emergency and After-Storm Service: What to Expect

Not every dealer offers round-the-clock help. Generac's dealer tiers page lists 24/7 emergency support as a feature of Elite Plus dealers, so check a dealer's tier and ask about emergency availability before storm season.

For urgent requests, Generac's service-request page advises contacting a dealer near you directly. Remember that the warranty excludes emergency labor outside normal business hours and failures caused by acts of God such as windstorms and hurricanes.

During a long outage, the owner's manual says to verify the oil level daily, because the generator will shut down if the oil level is low. Keep the enclosure louvers free of storm debris, and keep shrubs and grass at least 3 feet from the louvers.

Generac Service FAQs

Does Generac warranty work have to be done by an authorized service dealer?

Yes. Generac's 5-year limited warranty says warranty repairs must be performed by an Independent Authorized Service Dealer, and repairs or diagnostics by anyone else are not covered unless Generac authorizes them in writing.

How often does a Generac generator need service?

For 10-26 kW air-cooled home standby models, the owner's manual schedules an oil and filter change after the first 25 hours, a yearly water-intrusion inspection and fuel-system leak test, Schedule A every 2 years or 200 hours and Schedule B every 4 years or 400 hours. Check the manual for your model.

Is a Generac tune-up covered by the warranty?

No. The warranty excludes the cost of normal maintenance, including tune-ups, associated parts and adjustments. See our Generac service cost guide for typical price ranges.

Can I do my own Generac maintenance?

Normal maintenance is the owner's responsibility, but Generac recommends that all maintenance be performed by an IASD, and the warranty requires proof that the required maintenance was done. Keep records of any work you do yourself.

What is the difference between a Generac dealer and a Generac service dealer?

Some Generac dealers focus on sales and installation. The Service badge in Generac's dealer locator identifies Certified Service Dealers whose technicians are certified in diagnostics, maintenance and repair.

What should I have ready when I call for Generac service?

Your generator's model and serial number, any alarm code shown on the controller, and your warranty registration and maintenance records.
