A standby generator also needs cooling airflow and exhaust discharge.

Crowding them together can create:

For applicable Generac air-cooled units, manufacturer guidance includes approximately:

  • 18 inches at rear
  • 36 inches around side/service areas

Do not let the AC condenser occupy required generator clearance.

AC Manufacturer Clearance Also Applies

The condenser has its own installation manual.

Common requirements address:

  • Side clearance
  • Service panel clearance
  • Top discharge
  • Wall spacing

The generator cannot intrude into those zones either.

Avoid Exhaust Into the Condenser

Do not aim hot generator exhaust directly at the AC coil, electrical compartment or service area.

Avoid AC Discharge Into the Generator

Many condensers discharge hot air upward.

The generator should not be positioned where HVAC discharge interferes with generator cooling air or exhaust dispersion.

Service Access

A technician may need to remove AC service panels and generator side panels.

Leave enough room for both.
