A standby generator should not be located where engine exhaust can easily enter the home through:
- Windows
- Doors
- Fresh-air intakes
- Other building openings
The important distinction is:
wall clearance is not the same as window clearance.
A generator model that can legally sit 18 inches from a solid wall may still need substantially more separation from an operable window.
Why Windows Matter
Standby generators produce carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless and potentially deadly.
Is There One National Window Distance?
No single number should be applied blindly.
The required distance can depend on:

- Manufacturer instructions

Generac currently tells owners/installers to maintain proper unit clearances and keep the generator a safe distance from doors, windows and other openings into the home.

An operable window is generally more important from an exhaust-entry perspective because it can be opened.
But do not assume a fixed window automatically removes all placement concerns.
HVAC Fresh-Air Intakes
Do not place generator exhaust where an HVAC system can actively pull it into the house.
Basement Windows and Window Wells
Window wells can trap or channel gases.
Treat them as important openings when evaluating placement.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms
A standby generator does not remove the need for working CO alarms.
