Is the Cummins RS36 Really 36kW on Natural Gas?
Yes. The linked specification rates the RS36 at 36kW on both natural gas and propane in the 120/240V single-phase configuration. Use the matching document revision rather than an older fuel rating. Environmental derating and fuel supply can reduce available output.
How Much Does a Cummins RS36 Cost?
Get an itemized local installed quote; an equipment price does not cover the complete project. No verified current model-specific retail price is asserted here. Require separate line items for the generator and options, automatic transfer switch, battery, delivery and lifting, foundation, electrical work, fuel piping or tank, permits, commissioning and any meter upgrade or load controls. Compare equal scopes from qualified local installers. Remote siting, trenching, service changes and cold-weather accessories can materially change the total. Our whole-house generator cost guide explains the scope to compare.

RS30 vs. RS36: Is Another 6kW Worth It?
Compare running output on the fuel you will use, motor-starting performance and the complete installed system.
| Model | NG / LP output | Starting at 30% voltage dip | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| RS30 | 30 / 30 kW | Verify ordered alternator | 1,800 rpm |
| RS36 | 36 / 36 kW | Verify ordered alternator | 1,800 rpm |
The RS36 fits larger simultaneous loads that exceed an RS30, provided the fuel infrastructure and installed scope support 36kW. A small generator-only price difference does not establish a small installed difference: check fuel demand, delivery access and the exact ordered voltage/phase. Compare written quotes for the exact packages rather than carrying forward older price gaps.
RS36 vs. RS40: Why Would Anyone Stop at 36kW?
Compare running output on the fuel you will use, motor-starting performance and the complete installed system.

Will a Cummins RS36 Run My Whole House?
Only if the verified simultaneous running and starting loads fit the fuel-specific rating. The RS36 delivers 36kW on natural gas and 36kW on propane. It fits larger simultaneous loads that exceed an RS30, provided the fuel infrastructure and installed scope support 36kW. Electric heat, ovens, EV charging, pumps and multiple compressors can exceed the plan. A whole-service transfer switch does not mean every appliance can run together. Organize a load list with our generator size calculator, then have the installer verify the design.
Does a 400A House Need a 36kW Generator?
Confirm the exact package and transfer-switch model in writing. The liquid-cooled specification lists the automatic transfer switch as sold separately. Have the installer specify amperage, voltage, phase, service-entrance rating, number of panels and any load-management controls. The generator’s output amperage and the utility-service or ATS rating are different design limits.
Source: Cummins NAS-5777-EN, July 2021 specification.
At 240V single-phase, 36kW on natural gas is approximately 150.0A, not 200A or 400A. Service amperage is not the home’s measured simultaneous demand.

How Much Natural Gas Does the Cummins RS36 Use?
The Cummins RS36 uses 292.3 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 472.3 at full load on natural gas.
| Load | Natural gas, ft³/hr |
|---|---|
| 25% | 202.3 |
| 50% | 292.3 |
| 75% | 382.3 |
| 100% | 472.3 |
These are typical manufacturer consumption figures, not guaranteed consumption at a property.
Will My Existing Gas Meter Handle an RS36?
Your utility and installer must check capacity under the combined demand of all gas appliances. The RS36 alone needs 472.3 ft³/hr at full load in the linked table. Meter capacity, service pressure, regulator capacity, pipe length, fittings and pressure drop all matter. A larger inlet connection does not establish that the existing supply is adequate.
How Much Propane Does the RS36 Use?
The Cummins RS36 uses 114.1 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 182.7 at full load on LP vapor.
| Load | LP vapor, ft³/hr | Approx. liquid propane, gal/hr |
|---|---|---|
| 25% | 79.8 | 2.19 |
| 50% | 114.1 | 3.14 |
| 75% | 148.4 | 4.08 |
| 100% | 182.7 | 5.02 |
These are typical manufacturer consumption figures, not guaranteed consumption at a property. Gallons are calculated using the manufacturer’s 36.39 ft³ of LP vapor per liquid gallon. The adjacent m³/hr column is cubic metres of vapor, not gallons; the two values can look misleadingly similar.
How Long Will a 500-Gallon Propane Tank Run an RS36?
At an assumed 80% fill, a nominal 500-gallon tank contains about 400 gallons. At constant full load, 400 ÷ 5.02 gives roughly 80 hours; at half load, 400 ÷ 3.14 gives roughly 128 hours.
This calculation uses unrounded fuel rates and the manufacturer’s vapor-to-liquid conversion. It is not a usable-runtime guarantee: keep a reserve and allow for other propane appliances. Temperature, tank vaporization capacity, regulator size and minimum fuel pressure can limit operation before the tank is empty. Have the propane supplier size delivery at full-load demand and the coldest expected conditions.
Is the Cummins RS36 67 dBA or 63 dBA?
The July 2021 RS36 sheet lists 67 dBA at 23 ft with Sound Level 1. The older April 2015 sheet lists 63 dBA with Sound Level 2. These refer to different enclosure configurations, not interchangeable measurements of every unit. Older Cummins Sound Level 2 specification. Ask which enclosure and sound upgrade the quote includes. Distance, load, reflections, siting and local noise rules affect what neighbors hear.
How Often Does the RS36 Exercise?
The liquid-cooled specification supports an adjustable exercise time, frequency and duration, including a short two-minute cycle at six-month intervals. Have the installer choose a suitable program and verify the exact controller/manual settings; an exercise cycle does not by itself prove a successful load transfer.

What Warranty Does the Cummins RS36 Have?
The RS30 and RS36 liquid-cooled sheets list a two-year base standby warranty. Cummins’ coverage brochure distinguishes 1,000-hour and unlimited-hour configurations; confirm the exact applicable limit in the serial-specific statement. Coverage for parts, labor and travel can vary by year, package and warranty extension. The generator and transfer switch have separate terms; RA/RSS ATS coverage is listed at two years. Keep commissioning and maintenance records and obtain the complete written terms before purchase.

Does the RS36 Have Remote Monitoring?
Confirm remote monitoring as an ordered accessory for this controller. The RS liquid-cooled sheet lists a PowerCommand 500 internet-monitoring device among accessories. Do not assume it includes the same built-in connectivity as the air-cooled line. Get compatibility, hardware, commissioning and any service charges in the quote.
What Maintenance Does the Cummins RS36 Need?
For the Spec A QSJ2.4 units covered by A045R242 Issue 12, oil and filter service is due after the first 50 hours, then every 200 hours; the table also specifies the annual interval, whichever comes first. Check oil and coolant daily or every 24 operating hours. The manual lists air-cleaner replacement at 100 hours, spark-plug inspection at one year/200 hours, and coolant replacement at two years. This July 2018 manual explicitly covers C30 N6 and C36 N6 Spec A; do not apply its schedule automatically to Spec B or another revision. Have the servicing dealer supply the serial-specific manual and confirm any updated schedule.

How Long Can the RS36 Run During an Outage?
Extended outage operation requires adequate fuel delivery, load management and service at operating-hour intervals. There is no guaranteed unattended multi-day runtime here. For the RS36, arrange oil and coolant checks and a servicing plan before a long outage; fuel availability alone does not remove maintenance limits.

Is the RS36 Suitable for Off-Grid Primary Power?
This is an emergency standby generator for interruptions to a normal utility supply. A standby rating does not authorize continuous prime-power or off-grid operation. The air-cooled sheet explicitly excludes those applications from its emergency-standby warranty; liquid-cooled sheets describe EPA stationary emergency use. Obtain written application approval and applicable warranty terms before planning regular daily generation.
What Is the Cummins RS36 Spec-B?
Spec B identifies a manufacturing/specification revision, not simply a transfer-switch bundle. Confirm model, spec letter, serial number, voltage, phase and part number with the dealer. A specification or service schedule labeled Spec A may not apply. Match the operation, installation and service manuals before ordering parts or scheduling maintenance.

Our Take: Where the Cummins RS36 Fits
The RS36 fits larger simultaneous loads that exceed an RS30, provided the fuel infrastructure and installed scope support 36kW. Choose from the load calculation and service support, then compare equal installed scopes. A model number or a small equipment-price gap is not sufficient reason to upsize.
