Will a Cummins RS20A Run My Whole House?

Only if the verified simultaneous running and starting loads fit the fuel-specific rating. The RS20A delivers 18kW on natural gas and 20kW on propane. It fits buyers needing the largest output in this air-cooled group, particularly the additional propane capacity. Electric heat, ovens, EV charging, pumps and multiple compressors can exceed the plan. A whole-service transfer switch does not mean every appliance can run together. Organize a load list with our generator size calculator, then have the installer verify the design.

Can the RS20A Run Two Air Conditioners?

Check compressor starting demand and overlapping loads; HVAC tonnage alone cannot establish compatibility. The RS20A provides 18kW on natural gas and 20kW on propane, with 40kVA of published starting capability at a 30% voltage dip. Have the installer check the actual compressor nameplates, locked-rotor amps, allowable voltage dip and other loads already running. Two systems may require staggered starts, soft starters or load shedding.

RS17A vs. RS20A: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Compare running output on the fuel you will use, motor-starting performance and the complete installed system.

Model NG / LP output Starting at 30% voltage dip Speed
RS17A 17 / 17 kW 34 kVA 3,600 rpm
RS20A 18 / 20 kW 40 kVA 3,600 rpm

The RS20A fits buyers needing the largest output in this air-cooled group, particularly the additional propane capacity. Moving from RS17A to RS20A adds 1kW on natural gas but 3kW on propane; published starting capability rises from 34 to 40kVA.

RS20A vs. RS20AC: What's the Difference?

Confirm the exact package and transfer-switch model in writing. The generator-only air-cooled model does not imply an included ATS. For the 20kW platform, RS20AC (A071Z402) packages the generator with a 200A service-entrance-rated ATS; RS20A (A071Z397) is the warm-weather generator-only choice. RS20ACE (A071Z395) is the extreme-cold bundle. Have the installer specify amperage, voltage, phase, service-entrance rating, number of panels and any load-management controls. The generator’s output amperage and the utility-service or ATS rating are different design limits.

Source: Cummins NAS-6254-EN, September 2025 specification. The extreme-cold suffix identifies the cold-weather package; confirm heaters and climate requirements for the exact SKU.

Does the RS20A Include an Automatic Transfer Switch?

Confirm the exact package and transfer-switch model in writing. The generator-only air-cooled model does not imply an included ATS. For the 20kW platform, RS20AC (A071Z402) packages the generator with a 200A service-entrance-rated ATS; RS20A (A071Z397) is the warm-weather generator-only choice. How Much Does a Cummins RS20A Cost Installed?

Get an itemized local installed quote; an equipment price does not cover the complete project. Cummins’ home-generator page advertises a starting equipment MSRP of $5,438 for its 20kW line, checked September 30, 2026. This is a starting line price, not a verified offer for a specific SKU or an installed total. Require separate line items for the generator and options, automatic transfer switch, battery, delivery and lifting, foundation, electrical work, fuel piping or tank, permits, commissioning and any meter upgrade or load controls. Compare equal scopes from qualified local installers. Remote siting, trenching, service changes and cold-weather accessories can materially change the total. Our whole-house generator cost guide explains the scope to compare.

How Much Natural Gas Does the RS20A Use?

The Cummins RS20A uses 172 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 268 at full load on natural gas.

Load Natural gas, ft³/hr
25% 135
50% 172
75% 223
100% 268

These are typical manufacturer consumption figures, not guaranteed consumption at a property.

Why Do Some RS20A Pages Say About 300 ft³/hr?

Check the specification revision, model and fuel before using a fuel figure from an older listing. The linked NAS-6254-EN, September 2025 table gives 268 ft³/hr of natural gas at full load for the RS20A. Older product generations and different fuel tables should not be combined with current ratings. Have the installer size from the document for the ordered unit, with other gas appliances included.

How Much Propane Does the RS20A Use?

The Cummins RS20A uses 66 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 112 at full load on LP vapor.

Load LP vapor, ft³/hr Approx. liquid propane, gal/hr
25% 49 1.35
50% 66 1.81
75% 88 2.42
100% 112 3.08

These are typical manufacturer consumption figures, not guaranteed consumption at a property. Gallons are calculated using the manufacturer’s 36.39 ft³ of LP vapor per liquid gallon. The adjacent m³/hr column is cubic metres of vapor, not gallons; the two values can look misleadingly similar.

How Long Will a 500-Gallon Propane Tank Run an RS20A?

At an assumed 80% fill, a nominal 500-gallon tank contains about 400 gallons. At constant full load, 400 ÷ 3.08 gives roughly 130 hours; at half load, 400 ÷ 1.81 gives roughly 221 hours.

This calculation uses unrounded fuel rates and the manufacturer’s vapor-to-liquid conversion. It is not a usable-runtime guarantee: keep a reserve and allow for other propane appliances. Temperature, tank vaporization capacity, regulator size and minimum fuel pressure can limit operation before the tank is empty. Have the propane supplier size delivery at full-load demand and the coldest expected conditions.

Will My Natural-Gas Meter Handle the RS20A?

Your utility and installer must check capacity under the combined demand of all gas appliances. The RS20A alone needs 268 ft³/hr at full load in the linked table. Meter capacity, service pressure, regulator capacity, pipe length, fittings and pressure drop all matter. A larger inlet connection does not establish that the existing supply is adequate.

Does the RS20A Include a Battery?

Include the starting battery explicitly in the quote. The air-cooled sheet specifies a 12V Group 51R battery rated at 450 CCA at 32°F. Check fit, polarity and cold-weather accessories, and do not assume a generator-only listing supplies it.

How Loud Is the Cummins RS20A?

The air-cooled specification lists 65 dBA at 23 ft (7m), at the quietest point under normal load. This is not an explicitly guaranteed full-load or property-line figure. Ask which enclosure and sound upgrade the quote includes. Distance, load, reflections, siting and local noise rules affect what neighbors hear.

Can the RS20A Be Used Off Grid?

This is an emergency standby generator for interruptions to a normal utility supply. A standby rating does not authorize continuous prime-power or off-grid operation. The air-cooled sheet explicitly excludes those applications from its emergency-standby warranty; liquid-cooled sheets describe EPA stationary emergency use. Obtain written application approval and applicable warranty terms before planning regular daily generation.
