Will a Cummins RS17A Run My Whole House?
Only if the verified simultaneous running and starting loads fit the fuel-specific rating. The RS17A delivers 17kW on natural gas and 17kW on propane. It fits homes whose verified loads fit comfortably inside 17kW, with more starting headroom than the RS13A. Electric heat, ovens, EV charging, pumps and multiple compressors can exceed the plan. A whole-service transfer switch does not mean every appliance can run together. Organize a load list with our generator size calculator, then have the installer verify the design.
Can the RS17A Start a 5-Ton Air Conditioner?
Check compressor starting demand and overlapping loads; HVAC tonnage alone cannot establish compatibility. The RS17A provides 17kW on natural gas and 17kW on propane, with 34kVA of published starting capability at a 30% voltage dip. Have the installer check the actual compressor nameplates, locked-rotor amps, allowable voltage dip and other loads already running. Two systems may require staggered starts, soft starters or load shedding.
RS13A vs. RS17A vs. RS20A
Compare running output on the fuel you will use, motor-starting performance and the complete installed system.
| Model | NG / LP output | Starting at 30% voltage dip | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| RS13A | 13 / 13 kW | 26 kVA | 3,600 rpm |
| RS17A | 17 / 17 kW | 34 kVA | 3,600 rpm |
| RS20A | 18 / 20 kW | 40 kVA | 3,600 rpm |
The RS17A fits homes whose verified loads fit comfortably inside 17kW, with more starting headroom than the RS13A. Moving from RS17A to RS20A adds 1kW on natural gas but 3kW on propane; published starting capability rises from 34 to 40kVA.
Why Doesn't the RS20A Produce 20kW on Natural Gas?
Yes. The linked specification rates the RS17A at 17kW on both natural gas and propane in the 120/240V single-phase configuration. Use the matching document revision rather than an older fuel rating. Environmental derating and fuel supply can reduce available output.
How Much Does a Cummins RS17A Cost Installed?
Get an itemized local installed quote; an equipment price does not cover the complete project. No verified current model-specific retail price is asserted here. Require separate line items for the generator and options, automatic transfer switch, battery, delivery and lifting, foundation, electrical work, fuel piping or tank, permits, commissioning and any meter upgrade or load controls. Compare equal scopes from qualified local installers. Remote siting, trenching, service changes and cold-weather accessories can materially change the total. Our whole-house generator cost guide explains the scope to compare.
Does the Cummins RS17A Include a Transfer Switch?
Confirm the exact package and transfer-switch model in writing. The generator-only air-cooled model does not imply an included ATS. For the 20kW platform, RS20AC (A071Z402) packages the generator with a 200A service-entrance-rated ATS; RS20A (A071Z397) is the warm-weather generator-only choice. RS20ACE (A071Z395) is the extreme-cold bundle. Have the installer specify amperage, voltage, phase, service-entrance rating, number of panels and any load-management controls. The generator’s output amperage and the utility-service or ATS rating are different design limits.
Source: Cummins NAS-6254-EN, September 2025 specification.
At 240V single-phase, 17kW on natural gas is approximately 70.8A, not 200A or 400A. Service amperage is not the home’s measured simultaneous demand.
Does a 200A ATS Mean the RS17A Supplies 200 Amps?
Confirm the exact package and transfer-switch model in writing. The generator-only air-cooled model does not imply an included ATS. For the 20kW platform, RS20AC (A071Z402) packages the generator with a 200A service-entrance-rated ATS; RS20A (A071Z397) is the warm-weather generator-only choice. RS20ACE (A071Z395) is the extreme-cold bundle. Have the installer specify amperage, voltage, phase, service-entrance rating, number of panels and any load-management controls. The generator’s output amperage and the utility-service or ATS rating are different design limits.

Does the RS17A Include a Battery?
Include the starting battery explicitly in the quote. The air-cooled sheet specifies a 12V Group 51R battery rated at 450 CCA at 32°F. Check fit, polarity and cold-weather accessories, and do not assume a generator-only listing supplies it.
How Much Natural Gas Does the RS17A Use?
The Cummins RS17A uses 165 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 258 at full load on natural gas.
| Load | Natural gas, ft³/hr |
|---|---|
| 25% | 134 |
| 50% | 165 |
| 75% | 215 |
| 100% | 258 |
These are typical manufacturer consumption figures, not guaranteed consumption at a property.
Why Do Some RS17A Pages Say 289 ft³/hr?
Check the specification revision, model and fuel before using a fuel figure from an older listing. The linked NAS-6254-EN, September 2025 table gives 258 ft³/hr of natural gas at full load for the RS17A. Older product generations and different fuel tables should not be combined with current ratings. Have the installer size from the document for the ordered unit, with other gas appliances included.
How Much Propane Does the RS17A Use?
The Cummins RS17A uses 63 cubic feet per hour at 50% load and 102 at full load on LP vapor.
| Load | LP vapor, ft³/hr | Approx. liquid propane, gal/hr |
|---|---|---|
| 25% | 48 | 1.32 |
| 50% | 63 | 1.73 |
| 75% | 82 | 2.25 |
| 100% | 102 | 2.80 |
These are typical manufacturer consumption figures, not guaranteed consumption at a property. Gallons are calculated using the manufacturer’s 36.39 ft³ of LP vapor per liquid gallon. The adjacent m³/hr column is cubic metres of vapor, not gallons; the two values can look misleadingly similar.
How Long Will a 500-Gallon Propane Tank Run the RS17A?
At an assumed 80% fill, a nominal 500-gallon tank contains about 400 gallons. At constant full load, 400 ÷ 2.80 gives roughly 143 hours; at half load, 400 ÷ 1.73 gives roughly 231 hours.
This calculation uses unrounded fuel rates and the manufacturer’s vapor-to-liquid conversion. It is not a usable-runtime guarantee: keep a reserve and allow for other propane appliances. Temperature, tank vaporization capacity, regulator size and minimum fuel pressure can limit operation before the tank is empty. Have the propane supplier size delivery at full-load demand and the coldest expected conditions.
Will My Natural-Gas Meter Handle the RS17A?
Your utility and installer must check capacity under the combined demand of all gas appliances. The RS17A alone needs 258 ft³/hr at full load in the linked table. Meter capacity, service pressure, regulator capacity, pipe length, fittings and pressure drop all matter. A larger inlet connection does not establish that the existing supply is adequate.
How Loud Is the Cummins RS17A?
The air-cooled specification lists 65 dBA at 23 ft (7m), at the quietest point under normal load. This is not an explicitly guaranteed full-load or property-line figure. Ask which enclosure and sound upgrade the quote includes. Distance, load, reflections, siting and local noise rules affect what neighbors hear.
What Is Crank-Only Exercise Mode?
Crank-only exercise turns the air-cooled engine and runs diagnostics without starting it. The August 2024 operator manual says enabling this feature alternates crank-only and standard exercise sequences; it does not eliminate engine-running tests or load-transfer checks.

Is Cummins Connect Cloud Free?
Remote monitoring is built into the air-cooled platform. Cummins markets Connect Cloud for status alerts and remote control, but its current app page does not specify a recurring-fee policy. Confirm hardware, connectivity and any subscription charges in writing, including how the system communicates during an internet outage. Remote status and exercise control do not replace runtime maintenance.
What Warranty Does the Cummins RS17A Have?
The air-cooled RS13A/RS17A/RS20A base warranty is limited to five years or 2,000 hours for emergency standby use. Coverage for parts, labor and travel can vary by year, package and warranty extension. The generator and transfer switch have separate terms; RA/RSS ATS coverage is listed at two years. Keep commissioning and maintenance records and obtain the complete written terms before purchase.

Can I Use the RS17A Off Grid?
This is an emergency standby generator for interruptions to a normal utility supply. A standby rating does not authorize continuous prime-power or off-grid operation. The air-cooled sheet explicitly excludes those applications from its emergency-standby warranty; liquid-cooled sheets describe EPA stationary emergency use. Obtain written application approval and applicable warranty terms before planning regular daily generation.
What Maintenance Does the RS17A Need?
A062J680 Issue 6 lists oil and filter changes at the first 25 and 100 operating hours, then every 200 hours or two years, whichever comes first. Check oil daily during outages. Valve-clearance work is also scheduled at the first 25 and 100 hours and every 200 hours, and must be performed by a qualified technician. The air filter is scheduled at 200 hours or two years; dusty or hot conditions require more frequent checks or service. Follow the complete August 2024 table and confirm applicability to your model’s spec letter and serial number.

What Oil Does the RS17A Use?
The August 2024 air-cooled operator manual specifies full-synthetic gasoline engine oil meeting API SN/SN-RC and ILSAC GF-5. It lists 0W-30 for all temperatures and requires it below 0°F; 5W-30 is listed for temperatures above 0°F. Match the current manual and check the dipstick level rather than adding a nominal amount without measuring.

RS17A vs. RS17AE: What Is the Difference?
The RS17A is the standard version; RS17AE (A071Z401) is listed as the extreme-cold model. The September 2025 sheet calls for an extreme-cold kit on standard models in locations below 0°F. Its wider temperature claim requires the specified kits and installation; do not assume every base unit is ready for −40°F. For the 20kW line, RS20AC is the standard ATS bundle and RS20ACE is the extreme-cold ATS bundle.
How Close Can the RS17A Be Installed to the House?
Use the exact installation manual and approved site plan, with local code review. A clearance to a permitted wall is not a universal clearance to windows, doors, vents or exhaust-sensitive areas. Have a qualified installer confirm exhaust separation, combustible surfaces, service access, foundation, fuel pressure and permit requirements before choosing the location.
